Philosophy Now

Immanuel Kant

Nice article on the philosopher. Incidentally a waitress once told me that I had a cool last name. Hey, I swear, Desai was a witness.

It was a restaurant in the Uchicago neighbourhood - Pizza Capri might ring a bell for some readers ...

I've been to this restaurant but hey wait... is't this your little scam? Some error at passport office or the US consulate? What's your _real_ last name? Cheethirala?

No error nothing. I just don't like my last name - not a great fan of labels signifying caste etc. So I decided (actually the decision was my parents') to split my first name and start a new dynasty.

Actually my younger brother's last name is Raj (his is a separate dynasty altogether) and people usually confuse him for a Punjabi. He was even mistaken for a Pakistani when he was at Umich.

Haven't we all ? It's usually the first place I take any visitors ... you know, Sears Tower, Pizza Capri, Funky Buddha ...

Ha ! How did we miss this one ! So let me address you by your proper name Deep-Throat San (how many of you got the Japanese reference ?)

Hey the proper appellation is SpaceKowboy, Space for short. Guys be careful about letting out my real name ... I'm kind of a net fugitive.

What is the Japanese reference? An wait, you and your brother have different last names?

So you're obviously not a big fan of the Japanese school of art-porn.

Yeah baby! Who says siblings should share surnames ? We're talking full fledged post modern family here.

Here's the low down - on the day of school-enrolment of their brat #2 my parents were still grappling with a pesky problem - viz. "how to name it?"

Memories were still fresh about the ruckus caused during the naming of brat #1, who, as you all know, ended up with a faintly german sounding name.

So #1 saved the day by suggesting the name of a friend who used to sit next to him at school and help him out with those frequent last-minute-homework-issues.

As a name I think it sucks pretty bad but hey, I had to come up with something in half a minute.

Q. How did you get interested in Western philosophy?
A. Actualy, when I was an hour old, my parents gave me the last name...

What stories you can spin!

By the way, the title of this blog was in part a reference to a Seinfeld episode - "Serenity Now" :

Frank : "SERENITY NOW"
George : What was that ?
Frank : My doctor told me to say it. It keeps the blood pressure down.
George : Are you supposed to yell it ?

...... much later ....

Seinfeld : Kramer, are you okay ?
Kramer : (on the brink of mental collapse) : serenity now, serenity now .....
