Desi sitcom status report

Indiantelevision dot com's Perspectives: Indian television - a comedy of errors

Children, a little heads up about sitcoms in India. 'Yeh jo hain zindagi' is still the benchmark, apparently. I think those hasya kavi sammelans on DD were the funniest thing I've seen on desi TV.

Right on about those kavi sammelans - Surendra Sharma is one guy I remember very clearly. I was of course a big fan of Yeh Jo Hai ... but the article doesn't mention some of my favourites - "Flop Show", "Mungeri Lal ke Haseen Sapne" (I always hated Kakkaji ... Om Puri is a great actor but he can't do the Bihari accent) and of course "Wagle ki Duniya".

I might sound like a broken record here but I urge everyone to try Phaneeshwarnath Renu - there's astonishing range and variety in desi humour.

Okay, just a warning to those of you who are game to try on Renu - the guy tends to be sentimental at times. But his acerbic wit more than makes up for it.
