Personal news/blog/g-mail reader

RSSOwl

Here's a wish. There are some blogs that I read ocassionally. Some of these are personal blogs/team blogs. And some of them are news blogs. Then there are the news websites that I visit. And of course I check my gmail too. What if all the updates to these webpages of interest are collated and brought to me dynamically at a single e-mail client kinda app. Even better, what if I wanted a pdf of these updates, so I could print a copy and read it on the flight? The wish has come true - use RSSOwl.

Read through the pages describing this client. The RSS feed for this site is http://ogsandends.blogspot.com/atom.xml and you can check your g-mail box for the corresponding URL. And many news sites also offer RSS feeds. And yes, you can print a pdf copy of all the updates.

Folks, you have to download this client, spend some time customizing it, play around with its features to know what I'm talking about.

And if you create your ampetarate account in rssowl (see http://amphetarate.newsfairy.com/index.php?) - you have a client that is closest to the "personal web" client I've talked about.

Peach, you migh be right after all about Google's browser desgins.

Imagine Google creating an in-house browser, combining it with an RSS feed reader (like RSSOwl and remember GMAIL is already RSSOwl friendly) and it combines it with its Google Desktop search.

It will be one ultra personalized, super customizable, email/news/blogs/web/search monster client that everyone just has to have.

And this Amphetarate project (it enables a simple button in RSSOwl where you can rate a post/news item etc to indicate your preferences) uses simple Bayesian filtering and nearest neighbour algoithms to make recommendations! This is *exactly* what we were trying to use to make effective recommendations (based on user's browsing routines) in that shelved project of ours!

Our project was a little more ambitious in that, unlike amphetarate (where user indicates his likes/dislikes by quickly rating the articles brought to his inbox) we aimed to measure the time he spends on various articles, how often he visits them etc to figure out his "likes".

In short a client which will
- dynamically pull articles from various sources you specify.
- these could be news sites/blogs/g-mail etc
- allow you to quickly & easily rate the articles brought to you (using amphetarate)
- make recommendations to you about these "likes" (letting you discover more blogs/websites)

I think that email clients, web browsing routines, persnalization considerations and search requirements will merge our current browser and email-clients an creat a bigger monster in its place. Peach, if you are right about Google vdeveloping its own browser, I see where they are headed. Definitely, the way to go.
