The Malgudi Mage

Jhumpa Lahiri on R.K.Narayan

A master, a Tolstoy of the Indians or a Balzac. His concerns were universal, he was that noblest of creatures - a humanist

But also awkward, uncanny; a miniaturist as were Bruno Schulz and Muriel Spark, he wrote in holy fidelity to his world and his philosophy.

Neat review.

I think Jhumpa Lahiri is in some ways the right person to write this review. To some degree, she shares RKs sensibilities because her stories too are built around seemingly simple yet universal concerns.

The important trait is that ability to humanise characters even in alien settings with just a few words.

Yeah, I think she does have a similar sensibility to RKN. I was a little bit disappointed by the review, though. It started off very promisingly but lost its way.
